When was the last time you had a compliment on your hair?
...Can't remember? Then it may be time to update your hairstyle.
Your hair is one of the most important aspects of your appearance, as it's the first thing someone notices about you when you walk into a room. Because of this, it's vital that your hairstyle is in harmony with your face shape.
There are four basic face shapes: the oval, the square, the round and the heart. Read on to find out which one you are, along with some suggestions for each shape.
But to begin with...
Which shape are you, anyway?
I made a neat little quiz to help you determine your face shape. It's not 100% accurate, but it should give you an idea as to which you are. It's only three questions long, so give it a go!
(Hint: scroll down a little once you're done. There's a weird break between the quiz and the rest of the blog post, and I'm not sure how to get rid of it.)
Now read my descriptions of each and decide for yourself which you think you are...
The Oval face shape is seen as the 'ideal' face shape. It's balanced, and is approximately 1.5 times as long as it is wide. If you looked into a mirror and traced around your face with a lipstick or whiteboard marker, it would look kind of like an upside-down egg. It usually has a softly-rounded jawline - not too defined.
The Square face shape looks just like it sounds like - if you traced around it in a mirror, the shape would look square-like. Its forehead, cheekbones and jawline are almost equal in width. It's usually a shorter shape with a defined, angular jawline.
The Round face shape is a shorter shape with a rounded appearance. Again, if you traced around it in a mirror, it would look circular. The Round face shape is a shorter version of the Oval. It's almost as wide as it is long, with a softly-rounded jawline.
The Heart face shape is widest at the temples and has a narrow, pointed chin, so that when traced around in a mirror, it appears heart-shaped. It's about as long as the Oval, but has a slightly more angular appearance. It has a defined jawline with a prominent, pointed chin.
Figured out which one you are? Alright, now let's move on to...
Which hairstyle suits your face shape?
The goal for the Oval is to maintain the balance that's already there. Almost any style will suit you, so you can have lots of fun! Just know that if your shape is on the longer side, avoid a centre part, which will lengthen your face further. Olivia Munn, Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox all have Oval face shapes, so have a look at the styles they've worn and imitate them.
The goal for the Square is to balance out the angular shape with softer hairstyles. Look for soft waves, layers and movement. Avoid sharp, angular cuts. Side parts are best, as a centre part will emphasise the angular jawline. A fringe that's swept to the side is also great. Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes and Miranda Kerr all have Square face shapes, so check out the hairstyles they've worn as inspiration.
The goal for the Round is to lengthen and add some structure to the face. Avoid straight, heavy fringes, which will shorten your face even further, and avoid 'roundish' hairstyles, or shorter styles that follow the roundness of the face. Ginnifer Goodwin, Cameron Diaz and Michelle Williams all have Round face shapes, so have a look at some of their hairstyles for ideas.
The goal for the Heart is to balance out the prominent, pointed chin. Look for styles with volume and/or width around the jawline and chin. Avoid top-heavy styles or any fullness around the temples. Bobs in particular are gorgeous on Heart-shaped faces. Reece Witherspoon, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood all have Heart face shapes, so have a look at some of the styles they've worn to get inspiration for your cut.
