Finding a Style Icon

This week's #TipTuesday was about finding a style icon, and I decided to expand on this for this week's blog post.

If you want great personal style but aren't quite sure how to get it, find a celebrity with a style you love and imitate it. Celebrities are perfect for this because having a great style is almost a part of their job description. They have stylists who give them a defined style that they become known for.

Read on to learn my easy steps to finding and utilising a style icon...

Step 1. Define your basic style personality.

There are four basic style personalities: Classic Modern, Style Fashionista, Pure Natural and Creative Original. I recommend deciding which one you are before finding a style icon.
The Classic Modern style personality likes tailored pieces and a more refined, elegant appearance. This woman usually invests in classic items, and uses accessories to modernise them.

The Style Fashionista loves wearing the latest trends. She stands out in a crowd, and is known among her friends as being very fashionable. Her friends may even ask her for style advice!

The Pure Natural likes to be comfortable, and wears loose, soft pieces in natural fabrics that feel lovely on the skin. She probably doesn't like getting dressed up. Wearing makeup is a chore for her.

The Creative Original woman has a very unique style, and puts things together in unexpected ways. She also tends to enjoy thrift stores and markets. She fills her wardrobe with one-of-a-kind pieces.

Which one are you? Decide on your style personality before moving on to the next step.

Step 2. Decide on a Style Icon

Have a browse on Pinterest for different celebrities and their styles. Choose a celebrity that has the same basic style personality as you, and whose style you're really drawn to. You want to have an emotional connection to her style - you want it to speak to your soul.

Here are some suggestions...
Classic Modern: Victoria Beckham, Miranda Kerr, Audrey Hepburn or Kate Middleton.
Style Fashionista: Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Palermo, Taylor Swift or Kendall Jenner.
Pure Natural: Jennifer Aniston, Hilary Swank, Meg Ryan or Jennifer Garner.
Creative Original: Florence Welch, Katy Perry, Rhianna or Zooey Deschanel.

Search for each of these celebrities on Pinterest and have a good look at their styles. Imagine owning their wardrobe: how would that make you feel?

Okay, so you've chosen your celebrity style icon. It's time to move on to the final step...

Step 3. Imitate!

Now it's time to pin like crazy! Create a board called "Miranda Kerr Style" (or whoever you chose for your style icon) and pin every outfit of theirs that you love.
Next, go through your board and see if you can find 'outfit formulas' that your style icon regularly repeats. Here's an example for Miranda Kerr:

Miranda Kerr repeatedly wears a collared, long-sleeved blouse with the sleeves rolled up tucked into skinny jeans and carrying a classic-style bag. The colours of each piece changes, but the basic 'formula' remains the same. If Miranda is your style icon, perhaps it's time to add a few different versions of these pieces to your wardrobe.

Next, go through your board again and choose a couple of outfits that you really love. Let's look at this one as an example:
Let's say that you want to 'steal' this exact look. All you need to do is break the outfit down into its individual parts.

This outfit is made up of:
- A neutral silky singlet (tucked in)
- A high-waisted patterned midi skirt
- A classic black handbag
- Classic black pumps
- A simple necklace

If you don't have some of these pieces in your wardrobe, pop them on your shopping list. You don't need the exact pieces she's wearing; as long as they're similar, you'll have the look down and you'll look super stylish!

(Of course, you need to make sure that you adapt the look to harmonise with your colouring and body type.)

By following these steps, you'll have celebrity-worthy style before you know it! I hope you found this guide useful. Let me know in the comments how you go!

Until next time,

Kiarra
