The Met Gala: Best and Worst Looks

I love big red carpet events - it's so much fun checking out what the celebrities are wearing!

The Met Gala is especially exciting. Each year, there's a specific, often slightly strange theme. It's fun to see how the attendees respond to the year's theme.

This year, the theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination". (Quite a bizarre theme, but I digress...)

Below I've ranked a selection of looks from my least-favourite to my number one pick. Read on to find out who got it right, and who got it painfully wrong...

This is my least favourite of all the looks. I can understand that this is on theme, but it's doing nothing for her natural beauty. It's far too much fabric for her frame - she is completely swallowed up by the gown. If she had a lower neckline and/or shorter sleeves, the extra skin would help put her back in balance. Adding some accessories would also stop the look from being so bland.

I like this dress... just not on Salma. The colours are too muted for her - she needs richer, deeper colours. It also seems to be a size too small (her 'girls' look like they're absolutely suffocating!) and the length makes her appear shorter than she is. It also is a little too casual for this event - she should have upped the glam factor with some accessories and a more formal hairstyle.

Well, let's look at the positives first: I love the headpiece (perfect for the theme) and the gloves are a beautiful colour on her. Now the negatives: the dress is all wrong. Lighter colours make you appear bigger, just like darker colours minimise, so Mindy appears much bigger than she is, and the white isn't doing much for her colouring. Also, the cut, style and fabric of the gown are outdated, and do nothing for her figure.

This is a cool look, but doesn't quite work for the woman wearing it. The colours are great, but it's so short and wide that it makes her look as though she has wide hips and no waist. It puts her out of proportion, making her look incredibly short-waisted. On a positive note, I love her train! And the headpiece is gorgeous.

This look is great for this woman's body type, but unfortunately the colours overwhelm her. She looks best in softer, more muted colours, and this high contrast look is too much for her, dulling/greying her skin tone and making her look ill. If she wore gentler colours and her smokey eye wasn't so harsh, she would glow!

This gown is beautiful! Unfortunately, the colour isn't great for Amanda. Again, it dulls out her complexion, and is having a strange effect on her eyes - it almost looks as if she's been crying. But the style is stunning! The fabric drapes over her body in the most flattering way, making her look like a Grecian goddess. Her hair is styled beautifully, and I am seriously envious of her tiara!

I'm never a fan of SJP's red carpet looks, especially at the Met Gala. This one isn't as bad as some of her previous looks, but is still too over-the-top for her in terms of colour. The golden yellow is far too rich for her soft colouring, and her eyeshadow is way too much! Overall, the style of her look is very 'Met Gala', and she's on theme, so those are some positives. (And her headpiece is so cool!)

To me, this gown is a little too boring for the Met Gala. The style is good for her shape, though I'm failing to see its direct relation to the theme. My biggest problem with this look is the colours. This woman is another Soft (there are so many Soft women at this event!) so, again, the black and white is too much for her. The eye is drawn directly to the dress instead of her beautiful face.

Kate Upton is gorgeous, and this style is great for her body type - the slinky fabric enhances her curves beautifully. I also love her headpiece, earrings and the interesting hooded detail of the gown. The thing I don't like about this is - you guessed it - the colour. It's too dark for her, and drags her down instead of making her glow. If the gown were in a more medium-toned green, or a navy, it would be perfect!

If you're familiar with Selena Gomez's style, this is look is very much 'her'. It's quite boho/relaxed, and looks beautiful on her. My only problem with this is the colour - it completely washes her out. Selena looks best in deeper, richer colours, not pale hues like this one. The nude lip makes it even worse. If she were wearing a deep red lip, she may just have been able to pull this off. The colour of the gown would actually look better on her male friend!

This gown is very pretty. It's perfect for the Met Gala, and I love her accessorising. But again, the colour isn't great on her. It's not terrible, but not great. It's too pale for her - a more mid-toned blue would have looked a lot better. To me, the blue and the gold actually clash, too.  The style is great though, as the shape gives her an hourglass figure, though to me it's just a touch too long.

This gown is perfectly on-theme. Lily Collins has the colouring to pull off the black and white, and her headpiece is so cool! I love the style of the upper area of the gown - it highlights to her lovely collarbones. I'm not a fan of the bottom half of the dress, but that's just my personal style coming into play. To me, the only thing she got wrong was her makeup - it appears muddy and seems to just drag down her whole look. Less eyeshadow and a bright or deep red lip would have worked much better.

Now this is cool! I love Zendaya's red carpet looks - they're always daring and edgy, but she always pulls them off beautifully. I only have a few changes I would make to this: first of all, I would make it gold rather than silver: it would blend with her natural colouring so much better. Secondly, I'm not a fan of her hair colour and style, and thirdly, she should smile! She's gorgeous!

This is simple but lovely. The gown takes a more direct approach to the theme in the fabric, so its style is more classic. This style of dress is flattering on most body types, although Stella is an X (of course, she's a model!) so can pull off just about any style. The colours are perfect for her, and her hair and makeup are stunning and ethereal.

Now, this woman seems to be having so much fun! Frances is one of the only people with the attitude to pull off this type of crazy look. The headpiece is perfectly over the top, and the cape is fantastic! I am wondering what the gown under the cape looks like - from the little I can see, it looks great. Ladies and gentlemen, this is how you do the Met Gala!

Emma Stone hardly ever puts a foot wrong on the red carpet, and this look is no exception. The warm navy and gold combo is perfect for her colouring, and I love her gold eyeshadow! For many women, drop waists are hard to pull off, but they always look great on Emma. This is one of my favourites of the day.

To me, this look says 'fairy bride'! I absolutely love this style. The gold-flecked tulle fabric gives it a magical, mystical look. The colours are perfect on her - see how they make her glow! They don't distract attention away from the face, but harmonise beautifully with her gorgeous colouring. Love!

Okay, can we all just take a moment to appreciate this fabric? It reminds me of molten gold. Just stunning! The colour and style is gorgeous on this woman. I love tha her hair and makeup are beautiful yet understated, letting the gown take centre stage.

Okay, this gown is a work of art. It reminds me of butterfly wings, or a mermaid tail... or something. The colours are beautiful on Gigi - even though the gown is so beautiful, it doesn't take attention away from her face. This is what the right colours should do. Her hair and makeup are lovely, too.

Blake Lively is almost always the best-dressed at any red carpet event she attends, so it's no surprise that she makes my shortlist of best-dressed at this year's Met Gala. The style of this gown is perfect for her shape, hugging her figure in the best way without clinging, and the colours are stunning on her. I love the detail in her dress, and her headpiece completes the look!

All I can say is... wow. Only Katy Perry would be brave enough to pull this off - and I'm so glad she was! This absolutely fits the theme of "Heavenly Bodies". How amazing are those wings?! I know most people will either love or hate this look, but I love it. The Met Gala is all about being bold and a little out-there, and this is exactly what Katy Perry did!

What did you think of the looks at this year's Met Gala? Did you agree with my commentary? Which look was your favourite? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,
